Holiday Recipe: Christmas Ham with a Coffee Glaze

·         1 (5-6 pound) spiral sliced, bone-in ham

·         1/2 cup packed brown sugar

·         1/4 cup brewed dark coffee or espresso

·         1 teaspoon ground cinnamon

·         1 teaspoon black pepper

·         1/2 teaspoon kosher salt

·         1/4 teaspoon fresh ginger

To make the glaze, mix together the brewed dark coffee or espresso, brown sugar, cinnamon, ginger, salt and black pepper. Cook on low heat for about 5 minutes while stirring often until reduced.

Your Guide to Recycling K-Cups, Single-Serve Pods and Capsules

For those of us who are environmentally-conscious, brewing coffee at home with certain K-Cups, single-serve pods or capsules doesn’t exactly line up with our green beliefs. However, for those who love the convenience of K-Cups and other single-serve pods, there are ways to recycle with a little effort.

Most k-cups and other capsules are mostly made up of aluminum or plastic, and depending on the brand and manufacturer of your coffee, some might be recyclable and some may not be. To check, look for a recycling symbol on the bottom of the pod.

Keurig K-Cups 
Historically, Keurig has received the most criticism from environmentalists when it comes to recycling practices, considering up until 2016, the only way to recycle K-Cups was to separate its components. However, some K-Cups are now made out of polypropylene and the company is on the road to making all of its pods recyclable by 2020. For now, all K-Mug, K-Carafe, and Vue pods, as well as Green Mountain Breakfast Blend and Green Mountain Breakfast Blend Decaf K-Cups are recyclable.

Dolce Gusto
Dolce Gusto pods are also not technically recyclable, but there are ways to get around that. By separating the individual components, you can recycle each part of the pod. The Test: We popped a K-cup into our Keurig coffee maker and immediately noticed its pleasing aroma with an espresso vibe. At first sip, we realized that Green Mountain’s Dark Magic coffee was the real deal. The flavor has a spellbinding complexity with a strong yet smooth taste combined with an almost ethereal sweetness. The K-cup was strong enough to deliver its bold, dark roast flavor on the largest cup setting on our Keurig Brewer. During a second round, we added a bit of flavored creamer and noted that this exceptional dark roast can easily be morphed into a latte experience. It’s obvious that this K-cup will also keep its flavor and strength as an iced coffee.

The Result: On a scale of 1-5, we give Green Mountain Dark Magic K-cup a 4.9. For serious coffee drinkers, this is a must-have first cup of coffee in the morning. We imagine this coffee will hit the spot during the mid-afternoon slump, as well! The body has an attractive feel and no bitter aftertaste. You will not find a blend like this on your average supermarket shelf. This coffee is for real coffee drinkers, but adventurous light and medium roast drinkers could learn to love its robust flavor.

Green Mountain has gone and done it again – they have created another coffee flavor fit to be a stand-alone dessert…or have they? Our coffee connoisseurs are ready and willing to find out!

Today, we’re taste-testing Green Mountain Caramel Vanilla Cream Coffee K-Cups to see if there’s really anything at all to fuss about.

General Information: Each box of Green Mountain Caramel Vanilla Cream Coffee K-Cups contains 24 single serve cups for your K-Cup brewer.

The Test: We don’t need much preparation for this taste-test; we just need to be in the mood for dessert. Done – now that didn’t take long!

As the K-Cup begins to brew, we immediately notice the mouth-watering aromas of caramel and vanilla – a smell so divine we’re inclined to take a sip before the K-Cup brewer is done performing its magic! We close our eyes to take that first sip and our taste buds go crazy. Although the mouthful of this coffee is somewhat thin and watery, the swirling dessert-like flavors are just right.

The Result: On a scale from 1-5, we rate Green Mountain’s Caramel Vanilla Cream Coffee K-Cups a 4. This is a light roast coffee, so it may not be for our dark roast coffee fans.

And finally, to answer the question of whether this coffee could be considered a stand-alone dessert…well so far, we haven’t found a coffee that couldn’t.
